Proxy is, by definition, the authority to act for another. Proxy server is a like a buffer between your computer and the internet resources that you access. They accumulate the files, pages that most of the internet users are accessing into a special place called ”cache” to access rapidly and reliably.

If the page you want to access is not in the “cache” then proxy server access the page from it’s server and delivers to the client and saves a copy to the cache. This increases the speed. You can also hide your IP address through the anonymous proxy servers. They hide your information, IP and your interests so that no body can see who you are.
